Nick Cotton’s Ashes

As all you EastEnders’s fans will know, in emotional scenes that were screened last week, Dot Cotton scattered – what she thought to be her son Nick Cotton’s ashes – a task that saw her forced to choose her son’s final resting place and unsure whether the Square was the most appropriate place. The storyline highlights the anguish felt by many families when deciding funeral arrangements for the deceased, and although Nick hasn’t actually passed away and was in fact faking his own death, we wanted to use it as an opportunity to highlight the importance of discussing your end of life wishes.

Many people do still struggle to talk about end of life plans and share their wishes, but it’s so important to make sure that families know exactly how their loved ones want to do things once the time has come. The best option is for an individual to talk to the Executor of their will and put together an expression of wishes letter to leave in a safe place along with their will – possibly in a drawer with their financial paperwork. It will not only offer peace of mind, but can allow family members to understand their preferences and avoid any confusion or further grief at such an upsetting time.
